Description[Prunus depressa, ME]
Remarks[“July 31. . . On a small bare sand or gravel bar, I observed the same Prunus which grows on the rocks at Bellows Falls, whose leaf might at first sight be mistaken for that of a willow. It is evidently the Prunus depressa (sand cherry) of Pursh . . .” Journal 9: 499. 1857; "We passed the mouth of the Seboois on our left. This did not look so large as the main stream. ... {while we were looking for a good place to camp for we expected to be overtaken by a shower} ... On a small bare sand or gravel bar I observed that same prunus which grows on the rocks at Bellow’s Falls -- whose leaf might (at first sight) be mistaken for that of a willow -- but here it had small green fruit on it. Is not this the true sand cherry or prunus depressa of Pursh -- & variety of leaves distinct from the common allied one (P. pumila of Pursh) which is not depressed even when it grows, as it often does, abundantly in river meadows (e.g. Edmund Hosmer’s on Assabet) -- The leaf of the prunus is more what would be called perhaps lanceolate spatulate & I have never seen it in Concord -- [inserted here on a scrap of paper are passages partly in Latin from Pursh's Flora Americae Sepentrionalis (1814) about P. pumila and P. depressa ] Though the P. pumila [illegible]. Gray describes but one kind." unpublished passage for Journal July 31, 1857 ]
