[#148=2] [ ["Gathered grape leaves from under the rocks at Wheeler meadow & also from the path side a little higher up -- omitting the V.[itis] labrusca or downy stemmed ones --. another at Bittern Cliff wood & also Blackberry hill side beyond Elms -- One vine by the path appears to be the V.[itis] sinuata of Pursh -- (made a var[iety] of aestivalis in Big[elow]-) Its leaves are almost all 3 to 7 lobed in a peculiar manner -- almost rayed about center -- with rhomboidal sinuses -- (& a few somewhat simpler leaves --) ciliate on the margin -- teeth hardly mucronate -- cobwebby beneath only on the ribs &c -- smooth between them. The recent shoots, petioles tendrils &c purple on one side & smooth -- or some times with a few short hairs or bristles. V[ide] pressed ones -- though some under this are from another smooth vine close to it -- with many more single leaves -- yet ap[parently] the same species." unpublished passage from Journal July 21, 1856]

[#148-3] ["Sept. 6. At Brattleboro. . .A.M. - Walked down the railroad a mile, returning partly by river-bank. . . I find small grapes a third of an inch in diameter, many ripe, on the bank of the Connecticut, - pleasantly acid. Clusters three to four or five inches long. The leaves are sharply toothed and green on both sides. Is it the Vitis cordifolia?1 I see also a vine with equally small now green grapes, apparently like ours. Is not this V. aestivalis?
