FamilyAsteraceae
Type StatusPossible Type
Possible Type of Chrysopsis caespitosus Nuttall
Verified byD. E. Boufford
Determination RemarksComment on the type status of Nuttall collections affixed to GH 55846. H. M. Hall (1928) designated the lectotype of Chrysopsis caespitosa Nutt. (Wyeth collection affixed to unnumbered sheet at PH), but did not cite either Nuttall collection affixed to GH 55846 as a duplicate of type. If the label data for the specimen on the side of right the sheet are correct, [see label text in determinations field]
Taxon Reference(for Chrysopsis caespitosus Nuttall) J. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia 1834. 7: 34.
FamilyAsteraceae
Determination Stenotus acaulis (Nuttall) Nuttall
Determined byC. A. Morse
Date Determined2006
Determination Remarks(there is no indication that it was trimmed)it seems reaonable that the specimen was taken after the (1834) publication of C. caespitosa. I would guess that both specimens were taken by Nuttall during his own 1834-1835 expedition. At any rate, however, the evidence suggests that Hall was correct and that neither specimen should be considered a duplicate of the lectotype --C.A. Morse, 2007, R. L. McGregor Herbarium (KANU0) University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas USA [current name]
Annotation Textthis collection cannot be considered a duplicate of the lectotype of C. caespitosa, which was taken by Nathaniel Wyeth not Nuttall. The evidence regarding the type status of the specimen on the left side of the sheet is little more ambiguous. However, because the label for this collection identifies the specimen in Nuttall's own hand as a member of Stenotus and not Chrysopsis--and if the label was not trimmed prior to being affixed to this sheet [see note field for part 3]
