TitleCatalogue of New and Beautiful Plants
AbbreviationCat. New Beautiful Pl. [Veitch]
Remarks“John Veitch (1752-1839) was the original founder of the Veitch firm: his son James (1792-1863); his first son James junior (1815-1869); second son Robert Toswill Veitch (1823-1885); along with his three sons and traded as James Veitch & Sons. John Gould Veitch (1839-1870); Harry James Veitch (1840-1906); Arthur Veitch (1844-1880); Harry James and John Gould took charge of the firm on their father's death in 1869; Harry James’s two nephews James Herbert Veitch and John Gould Veitch II (sons of John Gould I) were taken in the business. The firm closed down (as a family enterprise) with the retirement of H.J. Veitch in 1914. Harry James Veitch can be regarded as the leading spirit from 1865 onwards and we therefore treat books issued by "James Veitch and Sons" under his name. For a concise and informative history see K.A.P. Fuller and J.M. Langdon (1973); see also James H. Veitch, Hortus Veitchii (1906)” (extracted from the TL-2, sub Harry James Veitch (1840-1924))
