Professor of Natural History at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, 1868-1870. Professor of Botany, Royal College of Science, Dublin 1870-1872. Professor of Botany, Royal Horticultural Society, 1872. Private Secretary and Editorial Assistant to J. D. Hooker 1885-1905. Assistant Director Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, 1875-1885. Director 1885-1905. Retired to Witcombe, Glos. Knighted 1899. Introduce rubber to Sri Lanka and Malaya and cacao to Sri Lanka. Botanical advisor to secretary of state 1902-1906. Revived Flora capensis, started by Harvey & Sonder, taking responsibilty from 1891 onwards, and edited Vols. 4-7 (1895-1925). 1877 married Harriet Anne Hooker, daughter of the botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker, 1 son & 1 daughter" (vide B.
